This study was prepared in order to assess the projects listed in the Lower Gales Creek Habitat Enhancement Plan (Stringtown Road to Gales Creek store stream reach) and to answer questions for the design, permitting and implementation phases.
The study evaluated the following questions for the five mile stream reach:
How is the channel functioning geomorphically as composted to historic conditions?
What is the expected long term stability of the channel?
Are the recommended projects appropriate within the existing morphology and sediment transport regime?
What effects would the proposed projects have on planform and profile stability and sediment transport conditions?
Are there external factors, such as land use change or changes in downstream base level that would affect the future success of the proposed enhancement activities?
Past reports cited the need for an assessment of existing large woody debris (LWD) to better understand current patterns in stream structure and habitat complexity within the Gales Creek watershed. ABR, Inc. conducted LWD inventories in the five mile stream on Gales Creek on September 28 and October 4, 2005 to evaluate the current levels of large wood in Lower Gales Creek. Surveys identified existing LWD, log jams and areas prone to recruitment of LWD from the riparian zone. This report documents the results of the LWD surveys on Gales Creek.
This survey walked the five mile reach to quantify and map invasive Japanese knotweed and English ivy. Approximately 11 acres of riparian areas within the 23 acre riparian zone was covered with 70% density of knotweed.
